BB: UBC, LET guards put up major points in weekend action

Woods, Haenni named CW Players of the Week

CALGARY – UBC's James Woods and Lethbridge's Jessica Haenni were named the Canada West Basketball Players of the Week by the conference on Tuesday.

Woods put up an impressive 58 points in two close games over the weekend.

He was electric in the team's Friday evening victory, lifting his Thunderbirds to victory on the shoulders of his 35-point night. The fourth-year guard was unstoppable, knocking down threes, jumpers and drives while snatching up eight rebounds. Woods added four assists in the 83-74 win over Trinity Western.

Woods went back to work Saturday, converting on 10 of 16 of his field goal attempts. His 23 points weren't quite enough as the Thunderbirds fell to the Spartans in an overtime thriller. Woods is now the co-leader of Canada West in points per game, averaging 27 so far this season.

He and the Thunderbirds return to the court Friday and Saturday, when they visit the Mount Royal Cougars in Calgary for 8 p.m. and 7 p.m. MST tip-offs respectively. You can catch the action exclusively on Canada West TV.

Meanwhile, Lethbridge's Jessica Haenni put on a show in Brandon this past weekend, notching 50 points in two victories.

She began her tear Friday evening, leading all scorers with 18 points while feeding the offence as a playmaker as well. The guard was locked in on defence, further contributing four rebounds as the Pronghorns beat the Bobcats, 82-52.

She looked inspired Saturday, going off for 17 points in the first quarter of the rematch. Her efforts led Lethbridge to a new school record for points in a quarter with 40. She showed off her athleticism, finishing the night with 32 points, five assists, three steals and three rebounds, while leaving the floor early in the convincing win. Haenni made the most of her chances, knocking down 13 of 19 attempts.

The performance was a career high for the 2021-22 CW Second Team All Star, as she rises up toward the top of the conference leaderboard for points per game.

Haenni and the Pronghorns will be back in action on Friday and Saturday when they host Thompson Rivers at 6 p.m. and 5 p.m. MST respectively. You can catch the games exclusively on Canada West TV.
