BB: TWU guard etches name in record books, LET sharp-shooter powers team in sweep

Bourcier, Haenni earn CW Player of the Week honours

WINNIPEG – Mason Bourcier and Jessica Haenni were named the Canada West Basketball Players of Week by the conference on Tuesday.

Bourcier accomplished a rare feat, posting just the 18th triple-double CW has seen since 2000. Then, if that wasn't enough, he went and did it again the next day.

It took the fourth-year guard just one weekend to put himself second on the CW career triple-double list (dating back to 2000). He now sits only behind Winnipeg's Erfan Nasajpour, who had four over his five-year career.

Bourcier captured each triple-double in convincing fashion, putting up 15 points, 12 rebounds, and 13 assists Friday to push TWU past the higher-ranked University of the Fraser Valley Cascades, 97-87.

He went back to work Saturday with 16 points, 12 rebounds, and 12 assists, adding assurance markers in each category. He created opportunities for the Spartans to surmount a UFV lead in the fourth quarter, before TWU ultimately fell to the Cascades, 102-88.

The Kelowna, B.C. product chipped in six steals over the weekend's games, affirming his talents on every side of the ball.

His Spartans split wins with the higher-ranked University of the Fraser Valley Cascades in two thrilling, tight affairs.

The Spartans (3-8) will be back in action Friday, when they host the University of British Columbia Okanagan Heat (1-9) for a weekend series. Tip off is set for 8 p.m. Friday and 5 p.m. on Saturday.

Game log:
Jan. 21: 15 pts, 12 rebs, 13 asts, 2 stls in 97-87 W at UFV
Jan. 22: 16 pts, 12 rebs, 12 asts, 4 stls in 102-88 L at UFV

Meanwhile, in Lethbridge, Alberta's own Jessica Haenni was also filling the scoresheet across stat lines. The versatile guard impressed from the three-point line, where she went a gutsy five-for-11 Friday night to lift the Pronghorns past Mount Royal University, 88-72.

Haenni posted 25 points, four rebounds, five assists and three steals in Friday night's win, before heading back to the hard court for 12 points, four rebounds and one steal in a Saturday night victory.

The fourth-year guard put up 37 points in a key weekend sweep for the Pronghorns, while shooting 43 per cent from behind the arc.

The Pronghorns (6-4) are now off for a week before heading to MacEwan University, where they take on the Griffins (1-6) on Feb. 4 and 5. Tip off is slated for 6 p.m. that Friday and 5 p.m. on the Saturday.

Game log:
Jan. 21: 25 pts, 4 rebs, 5 asts, 3 stls in 88-72 W vs MRU
Jan. 22: 12 pts, 4 rebs, 1 stl in 96-62 W vs MRU
