BB: Sharp-shooting guards make a splash in key matches

Reid, Dewar earn CW Player of the Week honours

CALGARY – Regina's Faith Reid and Saskatchewan's Alexander Dewar were named the Canada West Basketball Players of Week by the conference on Tuesday.

Reid went off for 49 points in a weekend sweep of conference rival, the University of Manitoba Bisons. The fourth-year guard was fearless from beyond the arc, draining 12 of 19 three-pointers over the two games for an otherworldy three-point shooting percentage of 63.2 per cent.

She now sits second among Canada West and U SPORTS athletes in three-point shot-making with a season average of 44.4 per cent. She also leads CW and U SPORTS in three-point field goals (80) and three-point field goals per game (4.0).

The efficient scorer contributed on the glass as well, posting 27 points, four rebounds and two assists in a 91-45 shellacking of the Bisons Friday night. She then put up 22 points and seven rebounds to help the Cougars to another decisive victory Saturday (79-52).

The two wins bring the Cougars to .500 on the season and put distance between them and Manitoba, a team that was at their heels.

The Cougars (6-6) now look to further improve their record at home against Brandon (0-12) with games on Friday and Saturday. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m. both days.

Game log:
Jan. 28: 27 pts, 4 rebs, 2 asts, 7-11 3PT in 91-45 W vs MAN
Jan. 29: 22 pts, 7 rebs, 5-8 3PT in 79-52 W vs MAN

Meanwhile, Saskatchewan's Alexander Dewar was finding every way to contribute to his team's sixth straight victory Friday, a 91-71 win over the University of Winnipeg Wesmen, a team looking to draw even with them in the East standings.

Dewar would deny the challenging Wesmen, though, posting 34 points, five rebounds, and two assists Friday. He gobbled up four steals and didn't waste shots, going three for five from behind the arc and 10 for 15 from the floor.

The third-year guard finished off a strong weekend with 23 points and one rebound Saturday, sinking two of three three-pointers, but it wasn't enough to overcome a sizeable first-quarter Wesmen lead. The Huskies' win streak ended at six, as they fell 86-78 to Winnipeg on the road.

The Huskies (8-4) will be back in action Friday and Saturday, when they travel to Manitoba to take on the Bisons (6-6) in a back-to-back. Tip off is slated for 8 p.m. Friday and 7 p.m. Saturday at Investors Group Athletic Centre.

Game log:
Jan. 28: 34 pts, 5 rebs, 2 asts, 4 stls, 3-5 3PT in 91-71 W at WPG
Jan. 29: 23 pts, 1 reb, 2-3 3PT in 86-78 L at WPG
