WBB | Grassick, Tuchscherer earn repeat first team nods
It comes as little surprise that the first All-Star Team is headlined by Saskatchewan Huskies standout Gage Grassick, who continued to elevate her game in her fifth and final season of eligibility. The reigning Canada West and U SPORTS Player of the Year was a driving force behind the Huskies undefeated 20-0 regular season, averaging 15.8 points and 5.4 assists per game. The honour marks Grassick’s third consecutive first team selection.
Julia Tuchscherer of UFV joined Grassick as a repeat first team selection after another dominant offensive campaign for the Fraser Valley Cascades. Tuchscherer led the conference in scoring at 17 points per game while also ranking among the league’s top rebounders, pulling down 8.6 boards per contest.
UBC guard Olivia Weekes earned her first career first team nod after being named to the second team a season ago. The fifth year standout nearly averaged a double double while helping the Thunderbirds secure a top finish in the Pacific Division. Weekes finished second in the conference in scoring at 16.8 points per game and ranked third in rebounds at 9.1.
Regina’s Cara Misskey made a significant jump from the third team to the first team following a well rounded season for a Cougars team that went an impressive 17-3. The sharp shooting guard led the conference with 113 assists and ranked among the top five in both field goal percentage at 47.5 and three point percentage at 37.1.
Rounding out the first team was Alberta’s Jayden Tanner, who averaged 13.4 points per game while providing strong two way play. Tanner played a key role in guiding the Pandas to a 15-5 regular season record.
The second All-Star Team featured Jade Belmore of Regina, Cassidy Buchanan of Trinity Western, Amélie Collin of Calgary, Maya Flindall of Saskatchewan and Mimi Sigue of Victoria. Collin led the conference in steals by a wide margin, recording 98 takeaways in 20 games while setting a new Canada West career steals record. She also paced the league in three point shooting percentage at 39.3. Flindall was another consistent threat from beyond the arc, converting 37.2 percent of her attempts.
Third team honours went to Abigail Becker of Victoria, Kiah Easton-Ihediohanma of Alberta, Cassie Joli-Coeur of UBC, Lily Pink of UBCO and Pollyanna Storie of Calgary.
The conference’s next wave of talent was recognized on the All-Rookie Team, highlighted by Victoria’s Avery Geddes and Manitoba's Taylor Schepp. Geddes stepped directly into a starting role, averaging nearly 35 minutes per game while tallying 73 assists, the seventh highest total in the conference. Meanwhile, Schepp also made an immediate impact, averaging 12 points per game and ranking third in free throw percentage at 82.7. Moriah Jansen of Trinity Western, Mishynn Miller of Alberta and Lilly Vande Graaf of Regina also earned rookie team honours.
MBB | Veteran stars highlight first all-star team
The men’s basketball First Team All-Stars are highlighted by a group of veterans who powered their programs to conference success, while also producing some of the league’s most impressive individual seasons.
Victoria Vikes forward Ethan Boag anchors the first team after leading the Vikes to a 17-3 record and the top spot in the Pacific Division. A steady presence throughout the season, Boag started all 20 games and averaged 14.4 points per game while adding 107 rebounds and 48 assists. He also shot 33.8 percent from three-point range, providing consistent scoring and versatility for the defending national champions.
Brandon’s Sultan Haider Bhatti earned first team honours following a dominant final season with the Bobcats. Bhatti finished third in the conference in scoring at 20.1 points per game while averaging a double-double with 10.5 rebounds per contest, making him one of the most productive frontcourt players in Canada West.
UBC forward Nikola Guzina was another consistent force, earning a first team selection after a strong all-around campaign for the Thunderbirds. Guzina’s blend of size, touch, and efficiency helped anchor UBC at both ends of the floor, averaging a 56.3 FG% and 16.1 PPG, ninth most in CW.
Winnipeg guard Kato Jaro represented the Prairie Division leading Wesmen, who finished as the conference's top seed with a 16-4 record. One of the conference’s top distributors, Jaro recorded 107 assists, the third-highest total in Canada West, while averaging 14.9 points per game. He was also one of the league’s most reliable free throw shooters, converting 87.1 percent from the line.
Rounding out the first team was Fraser Valley forward Dario Lopez, who delivered another strong season for the Cascades. The fifth year from Madrid led UFV with 15.2 PPG.
The second team All-Stars featured Isaac Simon of Alberta, Shadynn Smid of Victoria, Jayden Stephens of Thompson Rivers, Easton Thimm of Saskatchewan, and Daren Watts of Manitoba. Thimm stood out as the conference’s most efficient shooter, leading Canada West in field goal percentage at 59.7, while providing a consistent interior presence for the Huskies. Stephens was the top scoring threat on a resurgent WolfPack squad, ranking sixth in the conference with 17.2 PPG. Simon was right behind with 16.7 PPG while also ranking ninth in assists with 78 while leading Alberta into next weekend's semifinals.
Third team honours went to Mason Kraus of Manitoba, Connor Platz of Trinity Western, Kymani Pollard of Lethbridge, Renoldo Robinson of Victoria, and Jalen Shirley of UBC Okanagan. Pollard led all Canada West players in scoring at 21.8 points per game, while Shirley finished second in conference scoring at 20.8 and capped his career by setting a new UBCO program record for career points.
Platz also made his mark defensively, leading the conference with 68 blocks, finishing 40 clear of the next closest player and setting a new Canada West single-season record.
The league’s next generation of talent was recognized on the All-Rookie Team, which included Mrigendra Dhaliwal of Calgary, Edouard Gauthier of UBC, Munroop Gill of Brandon, Jacob McLellan of Mount Royal, and Cason Scott of Thompson Rivers. Gill particularly impressed offensively, finishing fourth in conference scoring with 17.9 PPG, right behind his teammate Haider Bhatti. Meanwhile, Dhaliwal evolved into the focal point of the Dinos offence, leading the team in his freshman campaign with 12.8 PPG.
