Nov. 7, 2026 - The battle for the Canada West crown goes down Friday night in Vancouver, as the UBC Thunderbirds take on the Alberta Golden Bears at Thunderbird Stadium. Kick off is set for 7 p.m. PDT, streaming live on BioSteel CanadaWest.TV.
Both teams have already clinched a berth at next week's U SPORTS National Championship in Victoria, but a Canada West banner and a more favourable national tournament seeding remain significant prizes.
Friday marks an incredible 11th consecutive Canada West championship final appearance for UBC. The Thunderbirds are looking to capture their record 24th conference title and have won six of the last eight Canada West championships.
For Alberta, the appearance marks a return to the conference championship match for the first time since 2016, when the Golden Bears defeated UBC on penalty kicks to capture the Canada West banner before going on to win the fifth national championship in program history.
The Golden Bears secured their place in this year's final with a dramatic 3-2 semifinal victory over Calgary, scoring twice in the final minutes before Canada West All-Star Justin George netted the winner in stoppage time. George, alongside fellow Canada West All-Star Patrick Kondraciuk, have been key contributors to Alberta's championship run. The Bears made an early playoff statement by defeating Fraser Valley 2-0 in the quarterfinals.
\nUBC, meanwhile, enters Friday's final still undefeated in 2026. After going 13-0-2 in the regular season, the 'Birds disposed of Lethbridge 6-0 in the quarterfinals, then bested Victoria 2-0 in the semis.
The Thunderbirds will look to rewrite recent history, as they also entered last year's Canada West final without a loss before falling 2-1 to Mount Royal, suffering their first defeat of the campaign.
"Having had such a strong season and then ending up not lifting a single trophy, that was disappointing," said UBC head coach Mike Mosher, who was recently named Canada West Coach of the Year for a second consecutive season. "This is an opportunity to lift a trophy and erase some of the disappointments from last year. We've had a very good season to date, but I say it all the time: this program's about lifting trophies and winning championships, so it's important to us."
Mosher knows Alberta will present a difficult challenge, particularly after the Golden Bears' dramatic semifinal comeback against Calgary.
"Full credit to them…getting to this game is not easy," Mosher said. "You go through the path of the league and then the new season in playoffs. You don't get to this game and not have good players. They've gone and found ways to win games, they got those two late goals against Calgary to pull themselves out of the fire and get that win, they had two early goals against UFV who is not an easy team to break down. We expect a strong opponent and hopefully a very good and entertaining game on Friday."
The championship finalists met once during the regular season, with UBC earning a 3-0 victory in Edmonton on Sept. 27. That result marked the beginning of the Thunderbirds' current nine-game winning streak.
Leading UBC into Friday's final are Canada West Player of the Year Max Comsia and captain Eric Lajeunesse, who earned his second consecutive Defensive Player of the Year honour.
"A lot of these guys have been through a lot of battles over the last several years and they've gone through those experiences in playoff games and so forth, but also it's a very intelligent group. When I say that I mean both their football IQ and just how they carry themselves off the field.
"We haven't lost a game this year, but we did face a bit of adversity and having to come back from being two goals down a couple times. Some of the goals we gave away were just not good enough. As much as we addressed it as coaches, the players took it upon themselves as well. We always preach clean sheets and limiting chances and so forth, and we've been pretty good here the back half of the season in that regard."
