"body": "
By Arash Madani, Special to CW

It’s after practice on a Wednesday and it’s dark on a cool night in Vancouver. Marvyn Larozar is maneuvering around UBC’s campus on a scooter, phone in-hand, headphones on, having a Zoom conversation that began about football. And how Derrick Henry is the most impressive running back today. And how in the world as an 18-year-old freshman, Larozar has emerged as the nation’s leading rusher. And how there was talk early in the season of the Thunderbirds playing him at defensive back. And how it was important for the second-youngest of five children in the family to leave home for North Carolina to play high school football there. And how he has this unrivaled thirst to be elite at the game, even at such a young age.

It was then that young Marvyn parked the scooter, sat down on a bench, then looked right into the camera of his device.

“My motivation to be great, where that comes from?” replied Larozar, repeating the question. He looked around. All was quiet, leaving him alone with nobody else in the vicinity.

“My motivation to be great definitely comes from my mom.”

**

It’s rare in today’s production-over-potential landscape of university football for teenage rookies to arrive onto the scene and stomp over the competition. Except in 2026, a phenom from suburban Ottawa arrived at UBC and has taken over Canada West football. In the T-Birds home opener, Larozar rushed for 285 and four scores. With a game to go, he leads the country in touches, yards and touchdowns. The week after his coming out party, he ran for 210 more.

In his office, Khari Jones leans back in his chair with a grin. “Marvyn’s a man-child,” is the way UBC’s offensive coordinator puts it.

Athletes like Larozar are the rarest of rare breeds. He’s one of the first on the practice field. Takes great joy in throwing the football around before workouts really get going. Jones, the former pro quarterback, had enough of watching Marvyn run around and sling it when it didn’t matter.

A couple of weeks back, the Thunderbirds opened proceedings against Calgary with a gadget play, dialing up a call they’ve coined “pizza.” All it involved was having Larozar fire a pass deep to Trey Montour for a 90-yard touchdown.

“That one had a lot of extra toppings on the pizza,” laughed Jones.

“The funny part about Marvyn is, his talents go beyond that. He’s a heck of a receiver. He plays good defense. He’s scratching the surface on what he can do and what he brings to us.”

Larozar knows what can be, and has such a thirst for more. To learn more. To achieve more. To grow more. Here’s a kid who was born two decades after Barry Sanders retired, and yet he studies the legendary sidestep of the all-time great – then attempts to emulate it in his workouts.

“This is only the beginning with me in the run game. Just a building block,” Larozar says. “To be able to do what I’m doing with all of my bad tendencies and bad habits – when I get better at the smaller stuff, I can’t wait to see what it all looks like.”

He’s so bought in to the process of it all, wanting to understand how every facet of the game interconnects. He believes the greater the knowledge, the larger the eventual payoff will be. Over the course of a 20-minute interview, Larozar spent a sizeable chunk of it talking about blocking schemes. How in middle school, with the Cumberland Panthers in Ottawa’s East end, he’d hang out with the offensive linemen at practice to learn how to be a better pass blocker. To work on squaring up his feet, have a wide base and keep inside leverage.
\n <figure\n class=\"release-content-image release-content-image--contained release-content-image--align-right release-content-image--wrap\"\n data-component=\"image-zoom-popup\"\n data-image-zoom-popup-selector=\".release-content-image__image\"\n data-image-zoom-popup-i18n=\"data:application/json;base64,eyJEb3dubG9hZCI6IkRvd25sb2FkIn0=\"\n data-image-zoom-popup-tracking-views-event=\"Story Image View\"\n data-image-zoom-popup-tracking-download-event=\"Story Image Download\"\n data-image-zoom-popup-placement=\"content\"\n >\n
\n <img\n src=\"https://cdn.uc.assets.prezly.com/d8d3ad9f-650c-4d08-b533-e3c23f22a5b5/-/crop/1571x1080/182,0/-/preview/-/resize/1200x/-/format/auto/\"\n class=\"release-content-image__image image-thumbnail-rollover__image\"\n data-description=\"Photo courtesy UBC Thunderbirds. \"\n id=\"image-d8d3ad9f-650c-4d08-b533-e3c23f22a5b5\"\n data-id=\"d8d3ad9f-650c-4d08-b533-e3c23f22a5b5\"\n data-original=\"https://cdn.uc.assets.prezly.com/d8d3ad9f-650c-4d08-b533-e3c23f22a5b5/-/crop/1571x1080/182,0/-/preview/-/inline/no/larozar+1.jpeg\"\n data-mfp-src=\"https://cdn.uc.assets.prezly.com/d8d3ad9f-650c-4d08-b533-e3c23f22a5b5/-/crop/1571x1080/182,0/-/preview/-/resize/1200x/-/format/auto/\"\n alt=\"Photo courtesy UBC Thunderbirds. \"\n />\n
\n \n <use xlink:href=\"#icon-expand\"></use>\n
\n
\n\n
\n
\n
“I take a lot of pride in my blocking, not just how I run the ball,” Larozar says.

When he is carrying the mail for the Thunderbirds, he’s noticing certain errors in his ways. How, for instance, he tries to force it to one side of the field or formation.

“I need better and wider vision when running the ball,” he says. “I have this thing where my eyes spark up when they see a hole. If I focus on the green grass – and not where people are at – the area of least resistance is to the end zone. As I’m going through the season, I’m trying to emphasize that.”

You just don’t hear insights like these from many 18-year-olds. Then again, the approach Larozar has always had when it comes to football is anything but conventional. He decided to play a number of positions to gain a broader understanding of the whole field. He was a receiver first, then moved over to defence at corner. Did it intentionally. To learn technique, get a feel of what it means to play off the ball, see what happens when you have leverage, and, as he explains it, “not let a receiver manipulate how you think he’s going to go.”

Larozar left home at age 16 to attend high school in Asheville, North Carolina. Played both ways there – at running back and in the secondary. When he enrolled at UBC, there were some early questions of where he’d suit up because of his versatility. The offensive staff put on the full-court press to make him their featured back. Early on, though, head coach Blake Nill was on the fence. He’d even mess with Larozar a little bit, repeating, “I’ll play you at safety, I’ll play you at safety.”

“Now,” Marvyn says from that bench on-campus, “now the jokes have stopped.”

Jones spends much of the game planning part of his week thinking of different ways to innovate with Larozar at the heart of it. Wild, isn’t it, that a freshman is an effective weapon as a decoy in the passing game and on play action. Defenses now have to pay attention wherever No. 1 is.

“I liken him to Steph Curry, that he brings people with him. Even without the ball, he’s valuable,” says Jones. “He’s our Swiss Army knife. It’s amazing to see the talent the kid has. And he’s got his eye on the prize.”
\n <figure\n class=\"release-content-image release-content-image--contained release-content-image--align-center\"\n data-component=\"image-zoom-popup\"\n data-image-zoom-popup-selector=\".release-content-image__image\"\n data-image-zoom-popup-i18n=\"data:application/json;base64,eyJEb3dubG9hZCI6IkRvd25sb2FkIn0=\"\n data-image-zoom-popup-tracking-views-event=\"Story Image View\"\n data-image-zoom-popup-tracking-download-event=\"Story Image Download\"\n data-image-zoom-popup-placement=\"content\"\n >\n
\n <img\n src=\"https://cdn.uc.assets.prezly.com/ba919096-4be3-43f6-9278-168cef32771a/-/resize/1200x/-/format/auto/\"\n class=\"release-content-image__image image-thumbnail-rollover__image\"\n data-description=\"Photo courtesy UBC Thunderbirds. \"\n id=\"image-ba919096-4be3-43f6-9278-168cef32771a\"\n data-id=\"ba919096-4be3-43f6-9278-168cef32771a\"\n data-original=\"https://cdn.uc.assets.prezly.com/ba919096-4be3-43f6-9278-168cef32771a/-/inline/no/larozar+2.jpeg\"\n data-mfp-src=\"https://cdn.uc.assets.prezly.com/ba919096-4be3-43f6-9278-168cef32771a/-/resize/1200x/-/format/auto/\"\n alt=\"Photo courtesy UBC Thunderbirds. \"\n />\n
\n \n <use xlink:href=\"#icon-expand\"></use>\n
\n
\n\n
\n
\n
***

Ah, yes. The prize. This is only the beginning, of course. Even with Larozar on pace to rush for more than 1,000 yards and double-digit touchdowns this season. He measures up at 6-foot-3 and 210 pounds, 25 more than just a year ago. His target is to tip the scales at 235 or 240 or so – to have the body type of his running back idol, Henry, the bruising back in Baltimore.

Pursuing the prize is at Larozar’s forefront. To achieve it, requires a balance of mindset and that added muscle.

“You have to have an imposing will. A will that, ‘I know what I’m doing, you know what I’m doing, but screw you,’” he explains. “I have to go into each rep, each play, that no one is better than me and no one will stop me.

“And also, being a physical freak of nature.”

Getting there requires, “quiet hours of working and solitude,” he says. A change from the child who grew up scrawny and enrolled in football at the age of eight, only because he admired his older brother, Mike, so much.

In football circles around Orleans, an Ottawa suburb, they called Marvyn “little Mike,” because “Big Mike” was the big defensive lineman that everyone knew.
\n <figure\n class=\"release-content-image release-content-image--contained release-content-image--align-right release-content-image--wrap\"\n data-component=\"image-zoom-popup\"\n data-image-zoom-popup-selector=\".release-content-image__image\"\n data-image-zoom-popup-i18n=\"data:application/json;base64,eyJEb3dubG9hZCI6IkRvd25sb2FkIn0=\"\n data-image-zoom-popup-tracking-views-event=\"Story Image View\"\n data-image-zoom-popup-tracking-download-event=\"Story Image Download\"\n data-image-zoom-popup-placement=\"content\"\n >\n
\n <img\n src=\"https://cdn.uc.assets.prezly.com/707e2ed9-5ccf-4440-a55d-1171dc313780/-/crop/1836x2267/0,527/-/preview/-/resize/1200x/-/format/auto/\"\n class=\"release-content-image__image image-thumbnail-rollover__image\"\n data-description=\"Photo courtesy Anne-Yves Nadro\"\n id=\"image-707e2ed9-5ccf-4440-a55d-1171dc313780\"\n data-id=\"707e2ed9-5ccf-4440-a55d-1171dc313780\"\n data-original=\"https://cdn.uc.assets.prezly.com/707e2ed9-5ccf-4440-a55d-1171dc313780/-/crop/1836x2267/0,527/-/preview/-/inline/no/IMG_20261029_114747.jpg\"\n data-mfp-src=\"https://cdn.uc.assets.prezly.com/707e2ed9-5ccf-4440-a55d-1171dc313780/-/crop/1836x2267/0,527/-/preview/-/resize/1200x/-/format/auto/\"\n alt=\"Photo courtesy Anne-Yves Nadro\"\n />\n
\n \n <use xlink:href=\"#icon-expand\"></use>\n
\n
\n\n
\n
\n
One day, little Mike came home and told his mom, “One day, I’ll be famous with football.”

Anne-Yves Nadro laughed and encouraged her son, because that’s what mothers do. Besides, things were busy at home. A single mom of five children, who worked, worked late, and as Marvyn puts it, “still cooked us all dinner. No excuses.” Those around Nadro speak of her kindness. With neighbours, friends, colleagues and strangers.

While there weren’t a lot of means around the household, Anne-Yves still found ways to get Marvyn into March Break football camps and provincial team tryouts. Football was her son’s passion. Even when Big Mike gave up the game, Marvyn pushed on.

“I made sacrifices and found resources to allow Marvyn to fulfill what he wanted to be,” Nadro says. “The well-being of my children, all of them, means everything to me.”

Marvyn watched what his mother went through. The adversity. Dealing with hardships. And how she pushed through it all. That’s why mom is the motivation. That’s why he wants it so bad on the football field.

“What’s my excuse? I’m well fed. I have clothes. I’m going through half of what she’s going through, and she keeps showing up,” Larozar says. “People are in worse situations than me. I have no excuse not to just chase greatness.”

Which is why the conversation to play high school football in North Carolina became real. With mom’s blessing and support, he went south.

“Going to Asheville, he’d have to push himself and prove himself, and he did,” Nadro said.
\n <figure\n class=\"release-content-image release-content-image--contained release-content-image--align-center\"\n data-component=\"image-zoom-popup\"\n data-image-zoom-popup-selector=\".release-content-image__image\"\n data-image-zoom-popup-i18n=\"data:application/json;base64,eyJEb3dubG9hZCI6IkRvd25sb2FkIn0=\"\n data-image-zoom-popup-tracking-views-event=\"Story Image View\"\n data-image-zoom-popup-tracking-download-event=\"Story Image Download\"\n data-image-zoom-popup-placement=\"content\"\n >\n
\n <img\n src=\"https://cdn.uc.assets.prezly.com/2935683f-08ba-4837-9a50-f232039e0b99/-/format/auto/\"\n class=\"release-content-image__image image-thumbnail-rollover__image\"\n data-description=\"Photo courtesy Anne-Yves Nadro\"\n id=\"image-2935683f-08ba-4837-9a50-f232039e0b99\"\n data-id=\"2935683f-08ba-4837-9a50-f232039e0b99\"\n data-original=\"https://cdn.uc.assets.prezly.com/2935683f-08ba-4837-9a50-f232039e0b99/-/inline/no/IMG_20261029_114725.jpg\"\n data-mfp-src=\"https://cdn.uc.assets.prezly.com/2935683f-08ba-4837-9a50-f232039e0b99/-/format/auto/\"\n alt=\"Photo courtesy Anne-Yves Nadro\"\n />\n
\n \n <use xlink:href=\"#icon-expand\"></use>\n
\n
\n\n
\n
\n
Mom, and Marvyn’s four brothers and sisters have been watching and following this rookie season for the books from afar.
