"body": "
Oct. 13, 2026 - There was plenty to be thankful for across the conference this past Thanksgiving weekend.

For CW hockey fans, it was the dawn of a new season and all the drama that comes with it. The opening weekend of conference play delivered many highlights, including three penalty shots in one night and a great late-game comeback from the Saskatchewan Huskies men's team. When the dust settled, UBC, Saskatchewan and MRU all came away with two opening wins on the women's side, while men's action saw MRU, Regina and Saskatchewan come away with opening weekend sweeps.

In Rugby 15s, the Lethbridge Pronghorns were thankful for a big team performance, headlined by Zina Umeh’s blistering speed. Umeh scored her team's opening two tries in a 37-14 win over Calgary, helping the ’Horns celebrate Senior Night with a complete team win on a cold, snow filled night.

Lethbridge also welcomed the 2026 Canada West Golf Championships to Paradise Canyon Golf Resort last week. Alberta’s Kai Baerg delivered a finish he’ll never forget, holing out for eagle on the final hole to secure a dramatic individual victory. UBC’s Katherine Hao defended her women’s individual title with a fantastic performance, while the Thunderbirds swept the men’s and women’s team titles.

In cross country, UBC hosted its first meet in more than 30 years, welcoming runners from across the conference to the inaugural UBC Farm Fest. The sun-drenched day featured a dominant performance from the UBC women, whose five scoring athletes all finished in the top 10. UBCO's Abigail Yakemchuk claimed the women’s individual title in 29:17. UBC’s Maximilien Fillion crossed the line first in the men’s race, while Regina placed four runners in the top nine, led by runner-up Ian Teichler.

The action continued on the soccer pitch as the regular season enters its closing stretch. UBC’s men picked up two wins to improve to 11-0-2, while Lethbridge strengthened its playoff odds with a 2-1 victory over Saskatchewan. On the women’s side, Calgary edged rival Mount Royal 2-1 to remain undefeated. UBC also preserved its perfect record with two more wins, though TRU became the first team to score against the Thunderbirds this season in a 2-1 defeat, breaking an incredible 25-game Canada West regular season shutout streak.

Meanwhile, the conference’s football and field hockey student-athletes enjoyed a weekend of rest before the final push to the playoffs.

Last but not least, we’re thankful for our dedicated readers. Thank you for supporting Canada West student-athletes!

Let's get to our BioSteel Players of the Week.

Women's Soccer - Maria Georgacacos (UBCO Heat)

Oct. 9 vs UNBC: 2 goals, 5 SOG, 1 GWG in 3-2 win vs UNBC

Oct. 11 vs UFV: 1 goal, 2 SOG, 1 GWG in 3-0 win

Maria Georgacacos showcased her ability to deliver in the clutch, scoring both match-winning goals over the weekend. On the first night against the UNBC Timberwolves, the second-year forward opened the scoring in the 44th minute off a feed from her sister Eleni Georgacacos. With the score tied late in the match, Maria took advantage of a ball deflecting off a UNBC defender to complete her brace and lift UBCO to a 3-2 victory.

Two days later, she once again took a pass from her sister and found the back of the net, scoring the eventual game winner in the 36th minute as the Heat earned a 3-0 win over the UFV Cascades. The Calgary native's performances helped the Heat earn a crucial six points as they look to make a late-season push for a playoff spot.
\n <figure\n class=\"release-content-image release-content-image--contained release-content-image--align-center\"\n data-component=\"image-zoom-popup\"\n data-image-zoom-popup-selector=\".release-content-image__image\"\n data-image-zoom-popup-i18n=\"data:application/json;base64,eyJEb3dubG9hZCI6IkRvd25sb2FkIn0=\"\n data-image-zoom-popup-tracking-views-event=\"Story Image View\"\n data-image-zoom-popup-tracking-download-event=\"Story Image Download\"\n data-image-zoom-popup-placement=\"content\"\n >\n
\n <img\n src=\"https://cdn.uc.assets.prezly.com/2c75903d-5943-41d1-b792-9077208f197f/-/format/auto/\"\n class=\"release-content-image__image image-thumbnail-rollover__image\"\n data-description=\"\"\n id=\"image-2c75903d-5943-41d1-b792-9077208f197f\"\n data-id=\"2c75903d-5943-41d1-b792-9077208f197f\"\n data-original=\"https://cdn.uc.assets.prezly.com/2c75903d-5943-41d1-b792-9077208f197f/-/inline/no/WK6+WSOC+UBCO+Georgacacos.png\"\n data-mfp-src=\"https://cdn.uc.assets.prezly.com/2c75903d-5943-41d1-b792-9077208f197f/-/format/auto/\"\n alt=\"Story image\"\n />\n
\n \n <use xlink:href=\"#icon-expand\"></use>\n
\n
\n\n

\n
\n
View CW Women's Soccer News, Stats and More

Men's Soccer -
